This month we are focused on the advantages of having a Buddy by your child’s side when they are training in martial arts. Studies show the important role having a good friend/training partner can play in a child’s success. Benefits include:
- ✅ More Fun & Excitement
- Kids love sharing experiences with friends, and martial arts becomes even more exciting when they can learn, laugh, and grow together!

Families in the Tampa area who want to explore structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training can learn more through this resource on bjj classes in Tampa, which outlines local options for beginners and youth programs.
It’s a helpful starting point for parents comparing different training environments and looking for the right fit for their child’s martial arts journey.
⭐ Did you know some of the world’s greatest athletes started their journey training alongside a friend? Having a buddy to encourage, challenge, and support you can make all the difference! There are many great examples of elite athletes who began training or competing alongside friends, siblings, or close training partners as children. Those relationships often helped build motivation, accountability, and confidence early on. Here are just a few examples:
- 🎾 Serena Williams & Venus Williams – The Williams sisters trained together from a very young age and pushed each other constantly. Their friendly competition helped both become world champions and two of the greatest tennis players in history.
- 🏀 Stephen Curry & childhood teammates/friends – Curry has often spoken about how growing up competing with friends and teammates helped sharpen his skills and confidence long before becoming an NBA superstar.
- 🥋 Ronda Rousey – Rousey trained in judo from childhood alongside teammates and close training partners. She has discussed how the friendships and training environment kept her motivated and resilient.
- ⚽ Lionel Messi and his youth academy teammates – Messi developed at FC Barcelona’s La Masia academy alongside lifelong friends and teammates. That supportive competitive environment helped shape his growth.
- 🏊 Michael Phelps – Phelps trained with a strong peer group and teammates from a young age. Training partners helped maintain the consistency and competitive drive needed for long-term success.
Martial arts history is full of examples where close training partners, siblings, or lifelong friends helped each other improve from childhood into elite competitors and champions. Check these famous MA Champs:

- 🥋 Bruce Lee & Taky Kimura – Taky Kimura became one of Bruce Lee’s earliest students, closest friends, and training partners. They trained, sparred, and even helped build Bruce Lee’s first kung fu school together in Seattle. Kimura later became one of only a few instructors personally certified by Bruce Lee to teach his system.
- 🥋 Chuck Norris & his early karate training partners – Chuck Norris has often credited the competitive environment of training partners and fellow martial artists for helping him become a multiple-time world karate champion before his movie career. He later trained alongside and taught other high-level athletes and celebrities.
- 🥋 Benny Urquidez & his brothers/siblings – Benny “The Jet” Urquidez grew up in a martial arts family where he constantly trained with siblings and partners from childhood. That daily challenge and support system helped him become one of the most respected kickboxers in history.
- 🥋 Ronda Rousey & her judo teammates – Rousey started judo as a child and trained closely with teammates who pushed each other daily. That team environment helped shape her Olympic-level mindset and later her MMA success.
- 🥋 Andy Le & Brian Le – The Le brothers trained together from a young age, studying martial arts films and practicing side-by-side for years. Their shared passion and constant training together eventually led them into Hollywood stunt work and action choreography.
⭐ Great martial artists rarely train alone.
Training partners and friends help students stay motivated, overcome challenges, improve skills faster, and enjoy the journey longer.
That’s one reason “bring a buddy” programs work so well in kids martial arts — friendships help create consistency, confidence, and long-term success.
This month we want to celebrate the importance of our students building these kinds of strong bonds with fellow classmates and friends. We are encouraging kids to bring a “Buddy” to class all month long and on Saturday, June 13th from 12 – 1:30 PM we will have our Summer Bash where one of our instructors will get a Pie in the Face! Help your kiddo to influence who gets Pied, by letting them bring a friend to class. That friend could become part of your child’s future success story!
